England women remain unbeaten in the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series after they beat India by six wickets in their first 50-over match of the competition at Derby today.
England got off to a tidy start taking two early wickets as Lydia Greenway ran-out Anagha Deshpande in the second over and Mithali Raj was smartly caught behind by Sarah Taylor for no score.
Any thoughts of an early night were soon banished as Poonam Raut (52) and Harmanpreet Kaur (41) rebuilt for India. The hosts had to wait until the 31st over for Holly Colvin to break the 83 run partnership as Kaur was trapped leg before wicket, leaving India on 98 for three.
India’s response to being pegged back to 128 for four was to attack with debutant Veda Krishnamurthy who raced to a maiden half-century from just 54 balls with eight boundaries.
She eventually fell to the returning Katherine Brunt as India’s innings fell away in the late dash for runs as they finished on 202-9.
After losing two early wickets, England looked to Charlotte Edwards (51) and Claire Taylor (41) to build the runs and in doing so Taylor passed the 4,000 run mark in international cricket. The 57 run partnership ended when Edwards was stumped by Deshpande and Taylor was later run-out leaving England on 136-4.
Lydia Greenway (51) stepped up once again to see England over the line together with a solid contribution from Sarah Taylor who hit 33 from the 29 balls she faced. Despite an average day in the field, England sealed a six wicket victory as they finished on 204 for four with four overs to spare.
Player of the match Lydia Greenway said: “I was really pleased to get us over the line. Charlotte Edwards and Claire Taylor put in a good partnership and Sarah Taylor played positively at the end to get the run rate up.
“We got off to a good start but we didn’t play our best cricket today, we didn’t perform in the field but pulled it back with the bat.
“We’ll be back training hard tomorrow and will set our plans as we look to hit our straps against New Zealand on Saturday.”
In the other match of the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series Australia beat New Zealand by 29 runs at Chesterfield Cricket Club. Australia finished on 261 on for nine and bowled New Zealand out for 232.
