Hashim Amla has been nominated for the Sports Star of the Year Award, which will be presented at the SA Sports Awards taking place at the Sun City SuperBowl on Saturday 20 August 2011.
Amla is up against swimming sensation, Cameron van den Berg, Springbok Sevens Flyhalf Cecil Africa, Masters Golf Champion Charl Schwartzel and prolific Banyana Banyana striker Noko Matlou for the coveted award.
Amla has already bagged a number of awards this past season, including the CSA Players’ Player of the Year and the CSA Fans’ Cricketer of the Year at the 2010 SA Cricket Awards.
Amla was also named in the Mail & Guardian’s annual list of 200 Young South Africans and nominated for the YOU Spectacular Sports Personality of the Year award.
Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, said the awards are an acknowledgement and recognition of the world class efforts of South Africans sports stars.
“It is very important that we continue to reward those who have achieved on and off the field of play. Many sportsmen and sportswomen put in a great deal of effort to ensure they get to the highest levels of participation. This shows our appreciation for their efforts,” said Mbalula.
