India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and decided to field against Sri Lanka in the 11th ODI of the tri-series at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
“We will need to bat and score the runs in around 40 overs,” said Dhoni. “So it is easier to chase and that way we have a better chance.”
“We would have batted had we not needed a bonus point.
“We have been in such situations in the past, the belief is there and we need to go out and express ourselves.”
Zaheer Khan has been recalled after Irfan Pathan was ruled out with an injury sustained in a fielding collision in India’s last match.
Sri Lanka has an unchanged lineup from the team which beat Australia last Friday.
If India can beat Sri Lanka with a bonus point, they will earn themselves an outside chance of remaining in the tri-series.
India will have to chase down whatever total Sri Lanka manage in 40 overs.
India would not only need a win with a bonus point to remain alive but also hope that Australia defeat Sri Lanka on Friday.
