India spinner Harbhajan Singh and batsman Yuvraj Singh have been ruled out of the rest of the England Test series following injuries sustained during the second Test at Trent Bridge.
Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and middle-order batsman Virat Kohli have been called up as their replacements ahead of the third Test at Edgbaston.
Ojha was set to join Surrey for the County Championship and the CB40 one-dayers but will now instead link up with the national team.
“The all-India senior selection committee has picked Virat Kohli and Pragyan Ojha as their replacements. Both players will join the Indian team at the earliest,” BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.
Yuvraj fractured his left index finger on the fourth day at Trent Bridge while facing up to a bouncer from Tim Bresnan, and the injury is expected to take four weeks to heal. Harbhajan has a Grade I abdominal muscle strain.
“Yuvraj Singh has fractured his left index finger, and Harbhajan Singh has a Grade I Abdominal Muscle strain”, BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan said.
“While Yuvraj Singh’s injury may take around 4 weeks to recover, Harbhajan Singh is likely to recover in 3 weeks’ time.”
Zaheer Khan may return from a hamstring injury to lead the attack at Edgbaston, while opener batsman Virender Sehwag arrived in England on Wednesday after shoulder surgery.
Gautam Gambhir, who picked up an elbow injury after being hit by a full-blooded sweep shot by Matt Prior at Lord’s, has been declared fit to play at Edgbaston.
India have to win at least one Test and not lose the other one as to prevent England from taking over as the number one-ranked team.
