Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars captain Jodie Fields is set to make her return to international cricket after an 18-month absence due to injury after today being named in a 14-player squad announced by the Women’s National Selection Panel (WNSP).
Fields’ return from a long-term hamstring injury is one of four changes in the squad that has been named for the rescheduled Rose Bowl Series matches against the New Zealand White Ferns and also the Quadrangular Series in England in June and July.
Alyssa Healy is the unlucky player to make way for the captain’s return, while Ellyse Perry and Rene Farrell were also unavailable for selection, as is Sarah Elliott.
Farrell has withdrawn from the 2011-12 AIS Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars squad, opting to take an indefinite break from international cricket.
Perry has Football Federation Australia commitments as she strives to make the final Matildas squad in the lead-up to the FIFA Women’s Football World Cup.
Additionally, world-number one ranked all-rounder Shelley Nitschke has announced that the Quadrangular Series will be her last for the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars. Nitschke is one of the most experienced players in the squad with six Tests, 74 One-day internationals and 32 Twenty20 internationals to her name since debuting in 2004. Nitschke’s great international career will be further recognised closer to the end of the series.
After consultation with New Zealand Cricket, Cricket Australia will host the three remaining Rose Bowl Series matches against the White Ferns after the series was postponed due to the tragic Christchurch earthquake.
The Rose Bowl Series is currently locked at 2-2 with the three remaining ODIs to be played at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on 12, 14 and 16 June to decide the series.
Following the Rose Bowl Series matches, the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars will head to England for the Quadrangular Series against the hosts, India and New Zealand.
