Victorian spinner Jon Holland has been called into the Australian squad for tomorrow’s match against Sri Lanka as cover for Xavier Doherty who suffered back spasms during today’s training session at the SCG.
Holland, who took 6-70 for the Chairman’s XI against India in December, will join the Australian squad in Sydney on Friday morning.
He has been in great form in domestic cricket, taking 6-29 against South Australian in a Ryobi Cup clash last week before blasting 55 with the bat in the Bushrangers’ Shield win earlier this week.
Doherty will be assessed by medical staff prior to the match before a decision on his availability is made.
“While Xavier Doherty’s injury is not deemed as being serious it is important we have capable cover in Sydney for tomorrow’s match,” Australian coach Mickey Arthur said.
“Jon has been bowling well for Victoria across all formats in recent weeks and we feel should he be required he will perform with distinction.”
‘For purposes of clarity, other spinners who are playing in Western Australia, either for WA or New South Wales were not considered nor was Nathan Lyon who is recovering from a quad strain gained in the Test series.”
