India vs New Zealand 1st ODI – Scorecard (19 January 2014)

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl in the first cricket one-dayer against New Zealand on Sunday.

Brendon McCullum said,’We would have batted first anyways. We played some good cricket against West Indies. This is a completely different challenge. India are a much stronger side.

‘We want to develop some consistency. We have obviously got four very good fast bowling options. On a fast bouncy wicket here, Adam Milne is a good match. It’s just the way it is with four high class bowlers. You got to pick horses for courses. Whilst he (Mills) is not playing, he will help out the younger guys.’

MS Dhoni said, ‘We are looking to bowl first. Looks like a good, dry, hard wicket. It means it will not change over a period of time.

‘The practise facility is good. For about four/five days, the batsmen and bowlers spent time. The field positioning and with a strong breeze blowing, you have to take a wise decision.

‘Every series we play is important for us. It will be good for few guys who have not played in New Zealand to get used to the conditions here.

‘It is a fantastic preparation ahead of the World Cup. The bowlers will have to be smart to bowl in the right areas. If the batsmen get in, we will see some high scores.’

Jacob Oram released from New Zealand contract

Allrounder Jacob Oram has been released early from his central contract by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) after an agreement was reached by both parties.

Oram has reflected on his playing future and believes he can no longer commit to focussing full-time on playing for New Zealand and the various obligations and demands that go with having a NZC Playing Agreement.

Oram plans to keep playing professional T20 cricket for Central Districts and intends to be involved in other competitions around the world.

“This was a very difficult decision but in recent weeks I have come to the conclusion that I can no longer make a full-time commitment to NZC,” Oram said.

“Various factors have led me to make this decision including my age, the stage of my career and the impending birth of my second child.

“I really enjoy the Twenty20 format and see it as a way to stay involved in cricket for a while longer.”

NZC Chief Executive David White said, “We appreciate Jacob’s situation and respect his decision.

“A NZC Playing Agreement has significant obligations on players and requires a full-time commitment and focus on playing for New Zealand.

“We understand Jacob’s situation and accept his request to finish his Playing Agreement early.”

Oram will no longer be a full time NZC Contracted Player but this does not necessarily prevent him from playing for New Zealand in the future.

“Form and fitness permitting the selectors may well consider him for matches or events in the future,” added White.

“However, that said, it is appropriate for me to thank Jacob for his excellent contribution to New Zealand Cricket over the past 12 years.

“Jacob has been a highly valued member of the BLACKCAPS team and can be very proud of his achievements on the field.”

Oram said: “I have loved every minute I have been fortunate enough to play for my country but the time has come for me to prioritise other areas of my life.

“Fortunately as a professional cricketer I can continue to play some T20 cricket as I transition into the next phase of my life.

“If the timing was right, and my form and fitness warranted selection, then I would definitely be available to play T20 cricket for my country but I have absolutely no expectations of NZC in that regard.”
