Perth Scorchers re-sign Marcus North, Simon Katich and Mike Hussey

The Perth Scorchers have re-signed Marcus North, Simon Katich and Mike Hussey as they strive to go one better in the 2012-13 T20 Big Bash League competition.

North returns as Captain of the Scorchers, and he will be joined again this summer by long-time friends and team mates Katich and Hussey.

North and Katich were key members of the team which qualified for the inaugural Big Bash League, which enabled the Scorchers to claim a place in the upcoming Champions League T20 tournament in South Africa.

In the inaugural BBL, North scored 273 runs at an average of 39, which included two half centuries, and his strike was 120.26 runs per 100 balls.

Katich batted only six times during the inaugural Big Bash League but he enjoyed a strike rate of 128.78.

Commitments with the Australian Test team restricted Hussey to just one outing with the Scorchers in inaugural Big Bash League.

Head Coach Lachlan Stevens says he is pleased to have three proud Scorchers lining up with the team again this summer.

“It is great to have the skipper back on board. Marcus is one of the most tactically astute players in the game today, and to have him involved in the planning and strategic direction of the team was very important to us,” Stevens said.

“Last year Marcus showed how valuable he was at the top of the order, holding us together in a few difficult periods and lighting up The Furnace on a couple of occasions. He demonstrated that even senior players can add some new tricks to their repertoire.

“I’m delighted that the only time we will see Simon Katich at top level cricket this summer it will be under the Perth Scorchers banner. The strength of character and tactical awareness that he provides helped to make us such a competitive side last year. He adds massive value on and off the field and we can’t wait to see him back.

“Mike Hussey represents everything that is positive about Western Australian cricket, so to have him as part of the Scorchers line-up was a big priority for us, and we are very pleased that he chose to remain in the orange this season.

“We may not see Mike day in, day out, but merely having him as part of our squad is a huge benefit to every member of the team, from the senior players to our core of younger guys. Like Simon, the example he sets both on and off the field can’t be underestimated.”

North, Katich and Hussey join Brad Hogg in the Scorchers’ squad for the second edition of the KFC T20 Big Bash League, which commences in December.

Perth Scorchers Sign Paul Collingwood

The Perth Scorchers signed former England Twenty20 skipper Paul Collingwood as their second overseas recruit for the inaugural KFC T20 Big Bash League. He joins former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs in Perth.

Paul has been in good form for County side Durham in their recent Twenty20 matches. It has also been just over a year since Collingwood led England to the 2010 ICC World T20 title in the West Indies.

Perth Scorchers Head Coach Mickey Arthur says: “I stated last week that overseas recruits need to bring outstanding qualities, and Paul Collingwood is another who offers so much to our set-up.

“Paul is a brilliant leader of men who helped mould his country’s T20 side into an exciting and ruthless combination, which culminated in their triumph over Australia in the final of last year’s World T20 in Barbados. Being the first skipper to lead England to victory at an ICC men’s event was a massive feather in his cap.

“Paul is a gutsy and determined batsman who can lift the scoring rate with his attacking stroke play, he is a proven wicket-taker with the ball and is first class in the field. I am thrilled to welcome him as our second overseas signing”.

Mark Cameron, Nathan Rimmington and Luke Ronchi have all been added to a squad that already contains North, Katich, Adam Voges, Mike Hussey and Shaun Marsh.

Arthur said, “It is very pleasing to have a proud Perth boy in Luke Ronchi behind the stumps for the Scorchers. His swashbuckling efforts will greatly bolster our batting line-up, but he also offers us sure hands with the gloves as one of the nation’s best wicket-keepers.

“We set out to recruit Nathan Rimmington because his ability to bowl at the death will be a tremendous asset for the Scorchers and I also expect him to get us some late runs with his power hitting down the order. Nathan is another tough competitor and that sort of character and experience will be invaluable.

“Mark’s raw pace will be called on to shake up opposing batsmen throughout the KFC T20 Big Bash League and I am looking forward to seeing him perform in front of the Perth Scorchers fans on the fast WACA Ground wicket.

“We are close to finalising our inaugural squad and look forward to more exciting announcements very soon.”

With the addition of Collingwood, Ronchi, Rimmington and Cameron, the Perth Scorchers have now signed 13 players which include Shaun Marsh, Simon Katich, Marcus North, Luke Pomersbach, Herschelle Gibbs, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Marsh, Tom Beaton and Nathan Coulter-Nile.
