South African captain AB de Villiers won the toss and chose to bowl against India in the Champions Trophy 2013 opener at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday.

India have left out Murali Vijay. Rohit Sharma will open batting while Dinesh Karthik will play in the middle order.

For South Africa, Dale Steyn will not be playing the match due to a side strain.

De Villiers said, “It is overcast and there might be a bit of movement around, but not for 100 overs. We would like to use the conditions.”

Mahendra Singh Dhoni said, “The toss was quite important but it was like everything. We too were looking to bowl first, but if the weather remains the same, then we can exploit it too.”

Morne Morkel to replace injured Chris Morris

South Africa allrounder Chris Morris has been ruled out of the remaining Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand because of a left quad strain sustained in the first match at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Friday.

Morris bowled 3.4 overs on debut and took 2 for 19 before he had to leave the field mid-way through his final over.

“Chris will need a recovery period of at least two to three weeks after injuring his left quad during the game, that effectively rules him out of the series,” South Africa’s team manager Mohammed Moosajee said.

“When he was bowling his fourth over he went for the effort ball, where he tried to bowl a short one, that is where he aggravated the injury.

“He was always fifty-fifty coming into the series, but yesterday when he had his fitness test he passed all the clinical markers. It is one of those injuries that can happen at any time.”

Morne Morkel, who was only scheduled to take part in the final T20I on December 26 in Port Elizabeth, will now meet up with squad in East London on Saturday ahead of the second match at Buffalo Park on Sunday.

Australia Squad For The First Test Against South Africa

Australia has announced squad for the first Test against the world number one ranked Test nation South Africa at the Gabba next Friday.

Australian selectors have preferred Matthew Wade over Brad Haddin for the series opener.

Commenting on the team, National Selector John Inverarity said, “Most discussion centred on the wicket-keeping role with both Matthew Wade and Brad Haddin presenting a strong and compelling case for inclusion.

“Matthew came into the Australian ODI team in February and has since acquitted himself especially well.

“Matthew and Brad both went to the West Indies; Matthew as our preferred ODI and T20 player and Brad as our incumbent and preferred Test match ‘keeper. As is widely known Brad returned to Australia early in the tour due to family circumstances and as a consequence Matthew was our Test ‘keeper for the three Test matches.

“He kept and batted very well and made a match-defining brilliant century in the second innings of the Third and final Test against West Indies.

“Since then he has played and gained valuable experience in England, the UAE and Sri Lanka. As a young player, getting better by the month, he is thoroughly deserving of his retention.

“While Matthew has been retained as the Test ‘keeper, Brad remains a player of significant interest.”

“The last Test match that Australia played, the Third Test in the West Indies last April, included Ryan Harris. Ryan is continuing his rehabilitation from injury and is unavailable.

“Peter Siddle and James Pattinson have recovered especially well from the injuries that rendered them unavailable for that last Test in West Indies. In fact, they have been enjoying an ideal preparation for the first Vodafone Test in Brisbane having played in three Bupa Sheffield Shield games with another one to come later this week.”

Australia squad for first Test

David Warner, Ed Cowan, Shane Watson, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke (capt), Michael Hussey, Matthew Wade (wk), Peter Siddle, James Pattinson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon.

The Delhi Daredevils squad includes six overseas cricketers – Jayawardene, David Warner, Kevin Pietersen, Ross Taylor, Morne Morkel and Andre Russell.

This will be a second CLT20 appearance for the Daredevils after they qualified for the inaugural season of the tournament.

South Africa replace England as top Test team

South Africa replaced England as the top team in the ICC Test Championship table following its 2-0 victory over Andrew Strauss’s team in the three-match series which ended at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London today.

South Africa’s series victory means that it is the clear leader at the top of the table and England is now second, pushing Australia to third place.

Graeme Smith and his team received the prestigious Reliance ICC Test Championship mace from ICC Chief Executive David Richardson who was joined in the presentation party by ICC Director and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Giles Clarke, ECB Chief Executive David Collier, Cricket South Africa (CSA) acting Chief Executive Jacques Faul and Pramod Garg – CFO, Europe Reliance Globalcom.

England had been the top team in the Reliance ICC Test Championship table since August 2011 when it dethroned India while South Africa has assumed the number one spot for the first time since November 2009.

South Africa Squad For T20 World Cup 2012

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has named its final squad for both the Men’s and Women’s competitions at the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka next month.

AB de Villiers will lead the men’s squad. Graeme Smith, who was picked in the 30 probables, has not made the final 15.

South Africa’s squad sees the return of De Villiers, Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel who were all rested for the triangular T20 series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh in June.

“We were not able to consider Marchant de Lange through injury,” commented CSA selection convener Andrew Hudson, “but we are confident that our squad will be very competitive and make South Africa proud.

“We have had basically the same squad together for the past year and many of them also produced stand-out performances at the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“The Proteas will also have excellent preparation for the World Twenty20 by finishing the England tour with three matches there.

“They may be playing on a different surface to that they will find in Sri Lanka but they will be able to hone their T20 specific skills.”
